What the lines carry
Colour on the map follows the commodity the operator declared on its T-4 filing. Natural gas dominates the network; crude oil and highly volatile liquids — ethane, propane and other NGLs — account for most of the rest.

Where the data comes from
The Railroad Commission of Texas publishes a pipeline layer for each of the state's 254 counties, derived from the T-4 permits every intrastate operator must file. We download all 254, reproject them from NAD27 to WGS84, and rebuild this map weekly.
A line is drawn where the operator said it is. The RRC does not certify positional accuracy, and the same physical pipeline is often filed as hundreds of separate segments — which is why clicking one highlights the whole system it belongs to rather than the single segment under the cursor.
Abandoned lines are still in the data and still on the map, drawn faded. There are 59,011 abandoned segments on file in Texas covering 50,639 miles. Abandoned does not mean removed: the pipe is usually still in the ground.
Why the rest of the country looks so bare
Texas is the only state that publishes a current, statewide pipeline layer with an operator on every segment. The “US lines” toggle draws the best national alternative, and it is a much thinner record.
Every intrastate operator in Texas must file a T-4 permit, and the Railroad Commission publishes the result. Most states collect something comparable and do not publish it. North Dakota, for example, requires operators to file pipeline centrelines as shapefiles, then releases them only on a signed request.
So the national layer comes from the US Energy Information Administration: 33,619 lines and 356,022 miles across all 50 states, last published in April 2020. It maps transmission and trunk lines. Gathering lines — the dense network that actually connects wells — are almost entirely missing from it.
The gap is easiest to see in Texas, where both layers cover the same ground. The Railroad Commission gives us 409,268 miles here. The EIA layer carries roughly a fifth of that. The two are different populations and should never be added together.
